This week, coinciding with World Mental Health Day, The Royal Foundation announced a £1 million contribution to launch the National Suicide Prevention Network—a vital initiative aimed at providing support, resources, and, most importantly, hope.
The news hits close to home for me. Tomorrow I will say goodbye to a friend I lost to suicide. It’s with both relief and regret that I reflect on this announcement: relief because no one should have to face these struggles alone, and regret because initiatives like this can’t come soon enough for those we’ve already lost.
During the filming for the network’s launch, Prince William was filmed speaking compassionately with a woman whose husband died by suicide. That image—of listening, of empathy, of shared humanity—captures exactly what this effort is about: breaking down stigma, showing that support is everywhere, it is within reach, and reminding anyone who is struggling that they are not alone.
If this network helps even one person make a different choice, it will be a success. But I believe it will do far more—it will encourage compassion, and help create a culture where reaching out is encouraged.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out.
